This project started out with me just wanting to make a stop motion animation, but not being able to come up with a story. So I started reflecting on my everyday life, searching for a little story I could use. One day while doing my laundry I thought about how I always miss one sock. So frustrating. “Hm, there’s a story”, I said to myself and went back to the drawing board.

So I thought: I need a main character and it will be a sock! And a washing machine. I asked my multi talented roommate if she could knit a super small sock for me. She accepted the challenge and knitted the little fellow on the left.

Then I needed a washing machine. I built one with cardboard and thin metal sheet. Since I had figured out that the machine was the one that made all the socks disappear, I thought I’d add a little scary, green light to it. After all; it’s evil!

After completing the sock and the machine, I started working on the set. I used thin chipboard to make the walls, 1 meter wide and aprox 50 cm high. I added sand to the paint to make the walls look like rough cement. Then I added a window with a fan, because the washing machine makes the air moist, and it’s important to air it out. I took some photos of the electric system in our basement to use as inspiration and made small outlets etc with cernit. I was quite pleased with the result.

After a lot of testing with the characters regarding walking and camera angles and the lighting, I could finally start “filming”. Picture by picture I captured every movement and ended up with 1500 photos. I used 300 of them and after editing and cutting and adding sound effects (which I had a lot of fun making with my brother) I finally had a film. It was a lot of fun, a lot of hard work and a great experience.

So do you want to know what happens to your socks? Be prepared to discover the ugly truth about how innocent socks are lured into a foamy death. Turn up the volume, cause you’re about to see “Sokkedarisei“. Mwahahaha!
